We know the Library's collections, programs, and facilities are important to the citizens of Luzerne County. With the international pandemic, we are not able to open our physical buildings to you, but our libraries are dedicated to serve the public in other ways. Below are some answers to common questions:

How long will the library be closed?

  • The Office of Commonwealth Libraries has ordered public libraries across the state closed until further notice. For the safety of our staff and community, members of the Luzerne County Library System will keep our buildings closed and will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.

What library resources can I access while library buildings are closed?

  • Member libraries have a wealth of online books, audios, newspapers and magazines, accessible without leaving home. Many online educational resources for children, career and other learning resources for adults are also available. Throughout the next few weeks, we will be sharing different resources for parents, students, and teachers. Be sure to check each member library’s website and/or social media pages for these resources and other information.

Can I check out more eBooks and eAudiobooks while the library is closed?

  • Yes! Our entire online e-resource collection - including eBooks and eAudiobooks - will still be available for use with your library card. If you don't have a library card, sign up for one today to get access to these materials. We also have numerous research tools that you can utilize.

I don't have a library card. How can I apply for one?

  • If you are a resident of Luzerne County, you can apply for a library card online for access to our online collections and resources. Please fill out our library card application.

What if my items are due during the closure? Will I accrue late fees?

  • We encourage you to continue to enjoy the materials your currently have checked out. All due dates have been extended to ensure nothing is due before we reopen. All fines that existed prior to the closure will be assessed once we are open again. Any additional amount added to an existing fine will be forgiven.

Can I drop off my materials in the book drops at member library locations?

  • Refer to each member library’s website (or social media) for more detailed information. We have renewed all materials that were checked out that were not already billed. Return and bill notices have been disabled. Do not leave materials outside of the library; as you will be held responsible for the cost of the items if you do so.

Why can't I place holds on materials in the catalog?

  • Due to the mandatory closing order from the Governor, our library staff members are not allowed to be on site to process holds of physical items. This will be the case until the mandatory order is lifted; therefore, hold requests have been disabled in the catalog. Once we reopen, they will be re-enabled.

What if some of my holds are ready for pick up?

  • Any holds that are ready for pickup will be frozen during closure. Your holds will stay on our shelves until we open again, and we will provide ample time for you to pick them up.

What about holds that haven't been filled?

  • The system will save your spot in the queue for any holds you made before the temporary closing.

Will the library deliver materials to my home or mail materials to me?

  • At this time, libraries are unable to provide these services due to the Governor’s stay-at-home order, which limits access to library buildings. The Office of Commonwealth Libraries directs Pennsylvania public libraries to remain closed until further notice.

My library card is about to expire. How can I renew it?

    Recently expired and impending card expirations have been renewed through October 2020 as to not interrupt access to e-services. This change will not affect patrons whose cards expired prior to the mandatory temporary closing.

I have a question about my account or how to use online resources. Is there anyone who can help me?

  • Our phones are currently not being answered, however we are available to answer questions via our Facebook pages and email. Refer to your home library's website contact information or you may direct questions to reference@luzernelibraries.org. We are working to respond as quickly as possible and we appreciate your patience.

Are other libraries affected too?

  • Yes. Consistent with the Governor’s order to close Pennsylvania schools and libraries indefinitely, all public libraries are to remain closed until further notice.

Will it be safe to come to the library when it reopens?

  • Custodial staff have implemented enhanced cleaning protocols and are using an EPA-registered disinfectant. Cleaning companies will be conducting a deep clean and sanitation of the facilities before we open. We will take every precaution to keep all materials and surfaces safe when the library opens again.

Will the library be open for programs, meetings, Community Room reservations, or tutor sessions?

  • In the best interest of our community, all member libraries have decided to cancel all programs, meetings, Community Room reservations and tutor sessions until further notice. We will reassess but may need to cancel events in May and beyond. Please continue to check our member libraries' websites and/or social media pages for up-to-date information.
